Manager Process & Quality Management – Lanaken – Belgium

Introduction

The Manager PQM is responsible for Process and QualityManagement in the mill. Responsible for quality assurance towards end products,half products, raw materials, operating standards and Quality systems.Optimisation of product quality and process effectiveness.  He/She act as interface in all quality andprocess related questions towards Sales, Marketing, TSS, Purchasing,Production, Finishing and R&D to realise output targets: maximisation ofprofits, assurance of customer requirements, realization of quality andefficiency targets, insurance of environmental demands in field of ownresponsibility.

Organization

Sappi Lanaken Mill, situated in Belgium at the border, near Maastricht in the Netherlands. It’s an integrated mill that produces CTMP on the basis of sawmill waste and tree prunings from durable forest maintenance. That way the mill is over 60% self-sufficient in the needs of fibre.

The mill produces several types of coated fine paper in grammages from 57 to 170 g/m2, in rolls and sheets. All papers produced in Lanaken Mill meet the highest quality standards and contribute to an efficient printing process, being very well-suited to magazine, brochure and catalogue production.

The PQM department consist out of 18 employees. Three managers, (Manager Process Technology, Process Manager and the Quality manager) are reporting directly to the Manager PQM.

Function

As a member of the Management Team  you will act as a business partner in this position.

  • Install and ensure achievement of yearly operational deliverables to comply with Sappi Lanaken strategy and vision.
  • Optimise performance of people and organisation: set-up, control and support an optimal added value process
  • Ensure legal compliance and contribute to sustainability of Sappi Lanaken Mill

Mill Strategy

  • Effectively contribute to Sappi Mill to meet customer, production and technical demands.
  • Provide and work out suggestions and ideas that optimise the mill strategic direction; develop and implement plans in line with the overall Sappi strategy.

Long term and midterm development for Paper Mill

  • Ensure availability of mid- and long term organisational development plans in topics such as, but not limited by, staff, capacity, productivity, investments, processing and quality in line with the mill site strategic plan.

Operational management

  • Lead PQM department and regularly reflect on own management skills, actively seeks feedback from team and internal customers and act upon it.
  • Continuously develop and optimise the potential and the capacities of people according to SPE&i principles. Regulate complaint handling and troubleshooting.
  • Manage and correct day to day running within approved quality level in line with standard committee decisions.
  • Responsible for improvement trials (process, quality) in the mill.
  • Responsible for conversion of new and further development of finished products into concrete targets for R&D.
  • In case of deviation, challenge, develop and suggest corrective measures, discuss and decide with Mill Director and Management Team, Sales, Purchasing, etc and act upon it.
  • Take initiative and get involved in introducing, approving and executing proposals for continuous improvement projects in areas of responsibility such as: safety and health, environment, working climate, products, productivity, investments, energy management; total quality approach, ISO, costs and profit optimisation.
  • Develop and obtain approval on detailed PQM plans (includes budget figures, with defined mix-quality and raw material consumption). Constantly seek ways to reduce costs and optimise production, processes and quality.

Multi mill operational performance

  • Member of the PQM platform to improve multi mill operational performance.
  • Facilitates in forming workgroups (e.g. trouble shooting and health check teams) to ensure continuous improving on SEU level, including optimized purchasing of all Raw Materials for Europe and specific Lanaken mill.

Requirements

  • University degree and a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience 
  • Languages: English fluent spoken and written
  • Continuously update knowledge PQM process and state of the art recipes to identify new possible directions.
